⚡ Attackers are already using AI. Are defenders keeping up?

This is my Darktrace story

During onboarding at Darktrace, I picked a code name: “lil byte”. It stuck — and now it’s the name of my weekly cyber updates. In this first episode, I explain why defenders need AI just as much as attackers do — and why this is changing the game. ⚡

Most organizations are still fighting modern AI-driven attacks with old, rule-based tools. Meanwhile, attackers automate, adapt, and scale faster than humans can react.

I kept asking myself: if attackers are using AI, why aren’t we?

That’s when Darktrace stood out. Its self-learning AI doesn’t rely on signatures — instead, it asks: “Why is this behaviour unusual for you — right now?”

In my first lil byte episode, I show how AI flagged a stealthy backdoor called SnappyBee. Not because it matched a known attack, but because it simply didn’t fit the organization’s normal pattern. Even better, Autonomous Response acts in seconds, buying humans time when it matters most.

💡 Any thoughts or comments on this approach to cyber defence? I’d love to hear what you think.
